Information about PONTA DELGADA Ponta Delgada, an important port located on São Miguel island, is the largest city of the Azores, and is one of their three capitals. With its population of 40.000 inhabitants, it is the busiest city, providing the chief commercial centre of the archipelago. The shopping centre and apartment complex Solmar is probably the highest building of Ponta Delgada, and, although it is not especially attractive from the outside, it's worth a visit. Inside are various cafés, ice-cream parlours and snack bars. And of course, there is the "Sentado em Pé" commercial centre inside the Solmar complex, which is a popular meeting place for young people. With its numerous and varied restaurants, bars, hotels and shops, Ponta Delgada is the best location on the islands for entertainment. However, it still manages to maintain its “small town” atmosphere. Ponta Delgada is also a winter resort. The City Gates, “Portas da Cidade”, constructed in the form of three arches during the 18th Century, is a good start to visit many of the city’s sites. To start with, there are the three imposing churches of the city, “Matriz de São Sebastião”, “São Pedro”, and “São João” which are authentic pieces of art from the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries. Also worth visiting are: the Mosteiro da Esparança , The Convent and Chapel of Our Lady of Hope, “Nossa Senhora de Esperança” generally known as “Convento de Esperança” or simply Saint Christ’s Church “Igreja do Santo Cristo”, which is home to the magnificent statue of “Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres” Christ of Miracles, the patron of the largest religious festival location in the Azores; The Colégio Church, “Igreja do Colégio” or “Todos-os-Santos”, the old Jesuit College and the Church of Sant’Ana , The “Forte de São Brás” which used to defend the city against the many pirates, and the “Mãe de Deus” fortress which was built in defence of Ponta Delgada, and is currently used as a lookout point. One other point of interest is the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, “Nossa Senhora da Conceição”, which is next to the Palace “Palácio da Conceição”, the seat of various government offices. The Fonte Bela Palace is presently a secondary school, and the Santa Catarina Palace, the residence of the Governor during the 18th Century, contains a beautiful chapel and interesting patio. The Sant’Ana Palace, a 19th Century construction surrounded by beautiful gardens, is currently home to the President of the Regional Government of the Azores. The City Hall, “Paços do Concelho”, is an interesting example of Baroque architecture. The Saint André Convent, “Convento Santo André”, presently functions as the Carlos Machado Museum. The Marina complex is a place where you can find rest and relaxation.
